He formed the Dee Jays in late 1956 and had played around the dances in sydney.O'keefe began recording for Festival Records in 1957 and had singles You Hit the Wrong Note Billy Goat (which did'nt get airplay in Sydney but did airplay in Melbourne due to Stan Rofe) and Am I blue. Johnny O'Keefe and the Dee Jays were not originally selected to be on the tour but when Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps were offloaded in Honolulu on the way to Australia both Lee Gordon and Alan Heffernan who were aware that Johnny and the Dee Jays had an strong following in Sydney went to Valentine's restaurant which was below O'keefe's father's furniture store where Johnny and the Dee Jays were rehearsing and asked him about getting the group to play Gene Vincent's music as well as backing up Alis Lesley and Eddie Cochran which O'Keefe would only agree if he could perform 3 songs in his own segment so they did. The tour began in Wollongong on October 1st which O'keefe got booed but he won the crowd over and the same thing happend in Sydney but after that never got booed again and the rest of the tour was very successful packing out the venues which in Adelaide there was an problem was when the police appoarched Alan heffernan that if the crowd become too wild the police would close the show down and in Melbourne an near riot occured in the ringside seats when Little Richard threw the clothes he had shedded into the crowd which it took the attendants some time to break the group trying to gain possession of it and the police told him not to do the striptease in the second session. it was in Melbourne where Little Richard saw the appearence of the russian sputnik on it's orbit around the earth which got him into an panic and that was when he thought the world was going to an end as well he decided to become an minster when he got back to the USA which in the second show in his robes reading the bible for 20 minutesand it was in Newcastle where he threw his rings, bracelets and necklaces into the water when the tour was crossing the Hunter River which the tour finished in Sydney on the 12th. Little Richard did go to the ministry as well as recording gospel music but came back in secular music in the early 60's and still performing to this day. 1. I was 12 living in Broken Hill and my parents would not let me go the concert, then on that date 21 years later we lost Johnny O'keefe. But then I seen Johnny O’Keefe a few years later two years running at the Adelaide Festival of arts and then he was booked again to appear at Centennial Hall at the Wayville Show grounds where he headed a concert with all the top Adelaide bands of the time this was his highest paying gig in his short career. I have never seen another artist that had the magic to work a crowd like JOK. He did return to Broken Hill think it was in 1974 to a sellout concert at the Civic Centre.
Little Richard was and is the True King of Rock n Roll he was Rock n Roll. I never got to see little Richard Live but got to see both Chuck Berry & Jerry Lee Lewis a number of times .

  2. I was allowed to go to this concert in Broken Hill aged 12, my father stood up the back 😊 The hall was only half full. Why on earth did they go to Broken Hill?

    1. Answering your question "Why on earth did they go to Broken Hill?" The answer is simple MOOLAH SPONDOOLY DOUGH Broken Hill was the wealthiest town outside of the capital cities. Wool prices were high, shearers wore tailor made suits, miners received a share of mining company profits. The city has produced minerals for over 130 years and still going.
So the personal wealth of its citizens enabled the promoter to have Little Richard and Johnny O Keefe stop over on their way to Adelaide. My dad told me there was another concert at night because he went to afternoon show with family and the night-time show too! The original Daddy Cool. RICK CAMPAGNA to HELEN LOVEGROVE 3 Dec 2017

  5. My father, mother, sister, brother and 8 year old self went as a family to see Richard. Must have cost dad a fortune. A family show it wasn't! Richard shedding layers of clothing until he was bare chested. I can still see mum covering her eyes convinced Richard was going to take his pants off! She lost it, paying dad out for bringing his kids to a risque show. Teenagers were dancing with great energy at the back of the hall and there was the music I had never heard anything like before or since (now 69yo) Three saxes honking with the band blowing so hard, distended cheeks like bullfrogs bustin' their instruments W O W. Drummer sounded like a machine gun, an unstoppable force. This is Broken Hill 1957 but I had heard this noise before! This town is a mining town with trains full of ore heading west. Little Richard equated to an ore train, an unstoppable force, such power, the band so tight, disciplined and Richard hasn't sung a note yet. He hits keys on the piano let's rip with a wooooo, from that point my life changed forever. John Lennon said on hearing Long Tall Sally "I couldn't speak!" David Bowie listening to Tutti Frutti said "I heard GOD!" Mick Jagger: "Little Richard was the originator and my first idol!" I couldn't have said it better myself. RICK CAMPAGNA 3 Dec 2017
