The answer is simple MOOLAH SPONDOOLY DOUGH Broken Hill was the wealthiest town outside of the capital cities. Wool prices were high, shearers wore tailor made suits, miners received a share of mining company profits. The city has produced minerals for over 130 years and still going.
So the personal wealth of its citizens enabled the promoter to have Little Richard and Johnny O Keefe stop over on their way to Adelaide. My dad told me there was another concert at night because he went to afternoon show with family and the night-time show too! The original Daddy Cool. Must have cost dad a fortune. A family show it wasn't! Richard shedding layers of clothing until he was bare chested. I can still see mum covering her eyes convinced Richard was going to take his pants off! She lost it, paying dad out for bringing his kids to a risque show. Teenagers were dancing with great energy at the back of the hall and there was the music I had never heard anything like before or since (now 69yo) Three saxes honking with the band blowing so hard, distended cheeks like bullfrogs bustin' their instruments W O W. Drummer sounded like a machine gun, an unstoppable force. This is Broken Hill 1957 but I had heard this noise before! This town is a mining town with trains full of ore heading west. Little Richard equated to an ore train, an unstoppable force, such power, the band so tight, disciplined and Richard hasn't sung a note yet. He hits keys on the piano let's rip with a wooooo, from that point my life changed forever. John Lennon said on hearing Long Tall Sally "I couldn't speak!" David Bowie listening to Tutti Frutti said "I heard GOD!" Mick Jagger: "Little Richard was the originator and my first idol!" I couldn't have said it better myself. Why on earth did they go to Broken Hill? But then I seen Johnny O’Keefe a few years later two years running at the Adelaide Festival of arts and then he was booked again to appear at Centennial Hall at the Wayville Show grounds where he headed a concert with all the top Adelaide bands of the time this was his highest paying gig in his short career. I have never seen another artist that had the magic to work a crowd like JOK. He did return to Broken Hill think it was in 1974 to a sellout concert at the Civic Centre.
Little Richard was and is the True King of Rock n Roll he was Rock n Roll. I never got to see little Richard Live but got to see both Chuck Berry & Jerry Lee Lewis a number of times .
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12443054447907245679noreply@blogger.com
